About the founder

Matthew Wood founded SCD Probiotics in 1998 after extensive study in the science of effective microorganisms. As part of his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Matthew conducted primary research at EARTH University in Costa Rica, where he experienced first-hand the powerful effect of beneficial microbes in the fields of enormous banana plantations. He continued his research on effective microorganism technology with international experience around the world, and received his Master’s of Science Degree in Bioproduction at the University of Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan under the direction of Dr. Teruo Higa.

Prior to starting his own company, Matthew worked closely with the EM Research Organization, Inc., developing EM projects in North America. He is a former Director of the Heart Forest Foundation of Kansas City and former Executive Council Member of EM Technologies, Inc of Tucson, Arizona. Fluent in English, Spanish and Japanese, Matthew has been a frequent guest speaker at global conferences on sustainability and effective microorganism (EM) technology. Matthew’s interest in a sustainable future was fueled at an early age, when his mother was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1989 and passed away five years later. He believed that the environment she lived in and the foods she consumed had an adverse effect on her health over a period of years. Concerns of current environmental and social problems led Matthew to believe that the existing way of life practiced by most industrial societies is unsustainable.

“US domestic food production, consumption, and the use of natural resources simply cannot continue in the same way,” says Wood.

By creating technology that facilitates models of sustainability, SCD Probiotics helps foster positive social change. As a husband and father of three young children, he continues to be passionate about finding ways to improve our personal health and the world around us, through sustainable, natural solutions.
